Pictures emphasising stillness is a gathering of baby socks and mittens – the labels document reactions to these leftovers of childhood, viewed from old age.

Using baby and children's socks donated to arthur+martha CIC  by members of Freecycle Buxton. Older participants from projects at  Marlhill Court and Cherry Tree Hospital in Stockport, created work by labelling  these socks with poems, thoughts and images. Each creates a double narrative, both within itself and with the 'innocence'  of the object:  one man told of how he saw his comrades fall in battle, they would bury  them where they fell with their socks and shoes, taking any valuables  home. He selected a grey child's sock, reminiscent of his army sock, and attached a short poem. Another piece tells of romantic dances, another the journeys feet have taken. Some are an oblique comment, or a word of advice or caution. These understated objects bring together the two ends of life.
